Week15 -- My Wikipedia Editing Experience This Week --SHAO TIANYI소염일

This week, I participated in the “Wiki Loves Pride/2025” event, where I translated a large amount of content about LGBTQ rights in Mexico into Chinese. 墨西哥LGBT權益This included sections such as the introduction, historical background, and legal developments related to same-sex marriage in Mexico. Through this translation work, I was able to deepen my understanding of the progress and challenges of LGBTQ rights in Mexico and contribute to enriching the Chinese Wikipedia coverage on this important topic.


During the process, I translated detailed information about how same-sex marriage has been legalized in various Mexican states through different legal and administrative methods. For example, I learned that Mexico’s Supreme Court has a unique but limited role: it cannot legalize same-sex marriage nationwide all at once but can do so state by state via the “action of unconstitutionality” process. I also translated how some states modified their civil codes but left bans intact, leading LGBTQ groups to file lawsuits with the Supreme Court to strike down those bans. Additionally, I covered how repeated court rulings against same-sex marriage in certain states can compel legislatures to repeal bans.


This experience helped me realize the complexity of legal reforms in a federal system and the multiple paths that social and legal progress can take. At the same time, translating legal terminology and ensuring clarity in Chinese was challenging but rewarding. I aimed to maintain accuracy while making the content accessible for readers unfamiliar with Mexican legal institutions.


Overall, this activity not only contributed to sharing knowledge about international LGBTQ rights but also helped me improve my translation skills and deepen my awareness of human rights issues. I look forward to continuing similar projects to promote cross-cultural understanding and information accessibility.

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan.  1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword.
