WEEK7——Wikipedia in the Age of Misinformation——SHAO TIANYI

 

Summary

In an era where misinformation spreads rapidly through social media and algorithm-driven platforms, Wikipedia stands out as a rare space for collaboratively verified information. However, it’s not immune to the consequences of digital manipulation. From coordinated disinformation campaigns to subtle vandalism, Wikipedia editors now face new challenges in preserving accuracy.

One example occurred in early 2023, when a viral conspiracy theory about a public health issue led to repeated false edits across multiple language editions. The community responded quickly, but the event exposed how vulnerable open-source knowledge can be in highly polarized online environments.

To maintain trust, Wikipedia has increased reliance on edit filters, real-time moderation bots, and stricter source requirements. Meanwhile, the Wikimedia Foundation is investing in tools that help detect disinformation patterns across pages.

Looking forward, Wikipedia may need to enhance collaborations with academic institutions and fact-checking organizations to verify high-risk topics. While technology plays a role, the platform’s long-term credibility still depends on its human editors.


My Thought

Wikipedia is a space where anyone can contribute, which makes it powerful—but also fragile. I believe misinformation won’t go away anytime soon, especially with how fast fake news spreads on social media. That’s why we need to protect spaces like Wikipedia, where facts matter and sources are public.

I also think the skill of critical reading is more important than ever. Instead of just blaming AI or social media, we should teach ourselves and others how to verify what we read, including on Wikipedia.

Week 1. My Recent Wikipedia Edits - Jeong seolah (정설아)

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan.  1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword.
