Week7----My recent Wikipedia edits--HE ZIXUAN
1. Summary
Recently, I edited part of the article "Yi Yang Qianxi" on Wikipedia. This is an attempt based on data verification, content supplementation and structural understanding. Although it is only a small change, it makes me feel that Wikipedia is not only a place to check information, but also a space where every ordinary person can participate in building public knowledge.
2. Interesting points
Wikipedia has extremely high requirements for "verifiability". Even a sentence that seems to be common sense, such as "Better Days" was nominated for the Academy Awards", must be marked as coming from authoritative media or official platforms. This made me rethink that the "credibility" of information does not depend on what we know, but whether it can be retrieved and verified by others
This edit made me realize that Wikipedia is not a "finished work", but a collection that continues to evolve. Every entry is an unfinished text, and every reader may become a potential author. This openness is its core feature that distinguishes it from other platforms
3. Discussion
In daily use, our dependence on Wikipedia is subtle. But in terms of contribution, most people are bystanders rather than participants. This raises a question worth discussing: If knowledge is public, should we also be part of its maintenance?
Your blog offers a great reflection on editing a Wikipedia article, highlighting the importance of verifiability and how Wikipedia is a constantly evolving platform. The author makes a thoughtful point about how even simple facts need reliable sources, and the question of whether we should all contribute to maintaining public knowledge is a strong takeaway. It encourages readers to think about their role in shaping shared information.
