week10-Recent Wikipedia edits LYU YANGCHENG2021008895
1 Summary
This week I chose to edit the entry "Political Comics". This is a theme that spans art and politics. It is not only a form of comics, but also a medium for publicly expressing positions and criticisms. I supplemented the entry content from definitions, historical origins to style development, and organized the structure of the original data to make the overall clearer and more logical. Especially in the "Historical Origins" section, I referred to early European comics and publishing examples, and supplemented the contributions of several important cartoonists.
2 Interesting Viewpoints
This time I noticed that "Political Comics" is not just an artistic expression, it also has strong media attributes. Gillray in the 18th century was like a "print media man" who used his brush to make a strong voice of the times. This made me realize that the development of early comics and newspapers is inseparable, and it is a public practice that interweaves images and political public opinion. Today we are accustomed to receiving "memes" or satirical images from social media, but the origins of these images actually appeared in the 18th century.
3 Thoughts of this week
This editing experience made me think about a question: When we add content to Wikipedia, are we also "participating in the discourse of knowledge"? Political comics, as a marginal but powerful medium, have often been ignored in the past, but they actually play an irreplaceable role in promoting social public opinion and public dialogue. Through this supplement, I feel like I am reorganizing a historical context, piecing together those seemingly fragmentary images, events and names into a complete knowledge map.
